Back in the fold
April 17, 2008
Like many a boy of the 1970s, I grew up on a steady diet of Mad Magazine. As a 9- or 10- year old, I got maybe half the jokes. But I loved it anyway, and understood enough of what I was reading to get the wry, screw-the-establishment sense of the whole thing.
Most of all I loved the drawings - by Don Martin, Sergio Aragones (later of Groo fame), and especially Al Jaffee, whose back-of-the-book Fold-In gags became a staple of the magazine for decades.
I hadn't given much thought to Mad in years, so I was delighted to learn that a couple of my 9th floor colleagues in the Times multimedia group recently put together this Flash tribute to classic Mad Fold-Ins of yore:
Mad Fold-Ins, Past and Present
And a profile of Al Jaffee.
