Postum

March 5, 2006

Ever since I had to renounce my caffeine habit about a month ago, I've been casting around for something to drink in the morning. So far I've worked my way through decaf (too frustrating), herb teas and fruit juice, none of which could begin to substitute for a good cup of mud.

Last night, my parents' friends the Fullers turned me on to Postum, an obscure coffee-like concoction made from wheat and molasses. It was apparently all the rage about 50 years ago, and still has a quiet but devoted following among a handful of retirees, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists and other caffeine puritans.

After drinking my first cup, I am here to tell you this stuff is not half bad.
