Requiem
September 24, 2003
It seems like every time a new dictionary gets released, the newspapers run the obligatory "new words" story in search of linguistic trendlines (e.g. "blog," "phat," cheesed off" being among the more over-reported recent additions).
But somehow you never hear the flip side of the story: what about all the words that get dropped? Today's Chronicle pays tribute to a few words that are falling out of circulation with the latest edition of Merriam-Webster's:
- snollygoster
- frutescent
- vitamin G
- sheep-dip
- impudicity
- pantdress
- long play
- poke bonnet
